Work Work Work..... Family
posted Saturday, 17 December 2005
Due to the Christmas rush here at ETDS (also know as Peak) I've been leaving for work at eight in the morning and coming home after ten at night. I"m not complaining, the extra money is nice for the holidays and it will be over in another week.
As usual I have a helper (we call them jumpers) for Christmas. She delivers while I drive and sort the packages. It's nice to have company but she is so young (19!). I mentioned Groucho Marx and she said, "Who
?" She was only four when the first Gulf War came about. I did a joke about Gilligan's Island and she gave me the deer in the headlights look. It makes for a long ten hours when you have nothing in common.
I don't see my family all week and if I do it's only to wish them a good morning or good night. I look forward to the weekends and decided to take advantage of a free Saturday. After the wife went to work I took the daughter to Guitar Center. She wants to play electric guitar and isn't interested in my Gibson SG, Les Paul Custom Deluxe or Fender Telecaster. A few months ago I gave her a Baby Taylor acoustic guitar but since she is into bands like Green Day she wants an electric guitar.
Guitar Center is a fun place with every kind of guitar you could want (with the exception of a Tenor Guitar that I've been wanting for a while). We wandered around until she found her dream guitar. She assured me she wants to save up her own money to get it and if she doesn't have it by her birthday I'll probably kick in the rest and add some serious accessories.
Then we went into the acoustic room and I played various high-end instruments and tried to keep my drool from touching them. I ended up buying a new guitar stand and we headed out for something to eat.
One of my customers gave me a gift card for a place called 5 and Diner. It's a fifties theme restaurant and I've wanted to try it for awhile. The place is a lot of fun. The waitresses wear fifties uniforms and there is 50's and 60's music on the jukebox. M
y daughter got a kick out of hearing Bob Dylan sing Everybody Must Get Stoned.
The food was great and there was a lot of it. I had pancakes and had a hard time finishing them. My daughter had a Big Bopper Burger and it was the size of her head. She got a little more than a third done and we took the rest home. I kidded her that it must have taken two cows to make that hamburger. I told her they should have called it Heifer Homicide.
It was a great day and much needed. I'm looking forward to the time after Christmas and plan to take some much needed time off.
