The old old house

posted Saturday, 28 October 2006
I wrote about someone taking my picture while I was doing yard work a while back.  One of his direct ancestors lived in my house (that I moved from but still own) back in the 1870's.  A couple of weeks ago I was over at the old house cleaning out my pole barn and moving a few things when he pulled up.  He had been driving by looking for me but didn't know that I had moved.
He's a really nice guy and a member of the LaGrange Historical Society.  We have a love of genealogy in common although he doesn't own a computer and does it all by hand.  I can't imagine doing that work without a computer or (as George Bush says) the internets.
We had a long conversation about the house and it's history.  He told me about all of the funerals held there over the years and of an alcoholic who would hide bottles all over the place.  I told him how when I tore out the walls of my daughter's bedroom I found lots of bottles.  He said he found bottles in the walls of his father's house too.
At the end of the conversation he gave me a framed photograph taken of the house taken in the 1870s.  It's a wonderful picture and I'm surprised at how little the house has changed.  The major things are the trim and a door going into the dining room that is gone and replaced by a window.
I'm grateful for the picture and look forward to seeing him again and getting all the information written down.

The picture looks a lot sharper but he framed and matted it so nicely I didn't want to take it out of the frame to scan.  If I can get a better scan in the future I'll post it.
Now that we are out of the house I plan to spend some serious time fixing it up and trying to return it to it's previous state.  My brother is incredibly handy and together we will get a lot done.
