The Kindness of Strangers

posted Saturday, 16 September 2006

I've been delivering in Sheffield Lake for twenty five years and the people treat me so well.  In the cold of winter people have given me hot coffee and cookies and in the dog days of summer they have given me ziplocs full of ice.  I like the this small town on the south shore of Lake Erie.

On Friday before Labor Day I was having a tough day. I'm still trying to catch up on our move to the new house and the long weekend was on my mind.  There is so much to do and before you know it the Christmas rush (peak) will be upon us.  The day wasn't going well and I resigned myself to working a long day.  I wasn't in the best of moods.

On my delivery area there is a nice apartment complex.  I had a small package for a guy and when I delivered it he was very friendly.  He asked if I played the banjo and when I said yes he told me he had heard people talking about me.  He then went to his closet and pulled out an open back banjo and gave it to me.  He said that he never got the hang of it and I was welcome to it.

The banjo looked brand new as did the case. I thanked him profusely and went back to work.  On my break I tuned it up and cranked out Old Joe Clark.  If Jeremy is reading this, Thank You.  The rest of the day was a breeze.  The best part is I am so motivated now.  I pulled out some tablature and spent some time listening to Grandpa Jones .  Life is good.

I needed some pictures so my daughter pitched in and took some artistic shots.  Here they are.

My daughter thought this would be cool.
